Overview

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its hormones. The endocrine system includes glands such as the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary gland, pancreas and ovaries or testes, which produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, and other vital functions.

An endocrinologis is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders related to the endocrine system, which includes glands that produce hormones. In clinical practice, endocrinologists manage a wide range of hormonal conditions that affect metabolism, growth, development, reproduction, and overall health.

Endocrinologists manage the following conditions:

  • Diabetes Mellitus (e.g.Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes)
  • Thyroid Disorders (e.g. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, goiter)
  • Osteoporosis & Bone Disorders (e.g.parathyroid dysfunction, vitamin D deficiency)
  • Adrenal Gland Disorders (e.g. Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease etc.)
  • Pituitary Gland Disorders(e.g. acromegaly, prolactinoma)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) & other reproductive hormone imbalances
  • Obesity & Metabolic Disorders

An endocrinologist works closely with patients to adjust medications and support lifestyle changes, and, together with a nutritionist, provides dietary guidance for managing metabolic conditions.

They also collaborate with primary care physicians, cardiologists, nephrologists, and gynecologists to ensure comprehensive care, and refer patients for surgery when necessary, such as thyroidectomy in cases of thyroid cancer.
